Sobre el lugar

Baucau Airport retains the longest runway in the nation despite remaining mostly unattended.

Formerly known as Cakung Airport, the site features a paved runway designed to accommodate large commercial airliners, exceeding the runway length at the capital in Dili. Built under colonial administration after World War II, local workers prepared the airfield by hand under Portuguese authority and Australian advisory input to create an international transit hub.

The facility operated as a key staging post on regional overseas routes to Darwin and formed a final overland stop on the hippie trail toward Australia. Transportes Aéreos de Timor ran scheduled flights using propeller planes until political upheaval and a coup halted operations. Today the airfield sits largely unused, leaving transport across the eastern district dependent on road vehicles.
