Sobre el lugar

Palacio de Cibeles stands at the intersection of Madrid administrative life and cultural programming.

The complex of white facades originally operated as the postal, telegraph, and telephone headquarters under the name Palacio de Comunicaciones before taking its current title. Following extensive municipal reforms, the site transformed into the City Council headquarters and the CentroCentro public cultural exhibition venue. It stands at the prominent roundabout facing the Fountain of Cybele where major boulevards converge.

Construction faced protracted interruptions driven by local political disputes and resistance from the Chamber of Commerce. Work stalled during changes in national governance before municipal teams completed the structure. Surrounding plots evolved alongside the palace, replacing historic estates with institutional landmarks such as Banco de España, Buenavista Palace, and Casa de América near the former grounds of Retiro.
