Sobre el lugar

Märcani Mosque anchors the Old Tatar Quarter as the sole Muslim house of worship in the city that maintained continuous religious services throughout the Soviet era.

Permission from Catherine the Great enabled local residents to fund the complex following decades of imperial bans. Architect Vasily Kaftyrev combined medieval Tatar building traditions with provincial baroque styling, complemented by Petersburg baroque interior decor. The complex avoided closure during Soviet anti-religious campaigns, preserving its status as the oldest continuously operating sanctuary in the territory.
