Sobre el lugar

The Great Omari Mosque embodies successive rebuilding campaigns over ancient foundations.

Ancient traditions link the underlying ground to temples dedicated to Dagon and Marnas, alongside folk legends regarding Samson. A Christian basilica occupied the site during late antiquity and appeared on the historical Madaba Map. Early Islamic leaders later converted the building into a congregational house of prayer named after Caliph Omar, which early geographers documented as a prominent architectural landmark.

Crusader forces later constructed a cathedral across the site, reusing classical columns bearing carved Jewish symbols such as a menorah, shofar, and bilingual inscriptions. Following Ayyubid reconquest, successive Mamluk sultans and Ottoman governors restored the halls after repeated earthquake collapses and warfare. Inscriptions carved by Mamluk rulers document major rebuilding programs across several reigns.

Recent military bombardment caused severe destruction across the complex, reducing the historic prayer halls to ruins. This physical devastation ended ongoing religious use and damaged irreplaceable architectural layers accumulated across centuries. Daily life around the compound now faces continuous disruption, hazardous debris, and suspended preservation initiatives.
