Sobre el lugar

A colossal Roman trophy stands above the coastline to mark the conquest of Alpine tribes.

The stone trophy occupies the highest point along the ancient mountain road between Italy and Gaul. Erected after Roman forces defeated the surrounding mountain tribes, the structure deviated from classical customs by honoring the emperor directly as a deity. Massive ashlar masonry once formed an imposing tower above the sea, designed to project imperial dominance across the coastal passage below.

Centuries of military conflict left the monument heavily damaged and mined, turning the ancient core into a stone quarry for surrounding houses. Modern preservation efforts later cleared adjoining village homes, consolidated the medieval masonry, and rebuilt the western face to display the imperial dedication. The adjoining museum and Mediterranean park now preserve architectural fragments retrieved from the hillside.
