Sobre el lugar

Ramybė Park transformed a desecrated multi-confessional necropolis into municipal public greenery.

Municipal planners established the site on former Discalced Carmelite monastery grounds alongside the eastern expansion of the city. Burials accommodated several distinct faith traditions, dividing plots among Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox believers, Evangelical Lutherans, and Muslims. Unplanned interments filled the grounds without uniform rows, while expanding residential blocks and heavy traffic quickly enveloped the perimeter.

The ground held fallen soldiers from international conflicts, political casualties, and notable national figures. During the Soviet period, local citizens gathered around the graves on All Saints' Day to light candles as an act of passive resistance and political protest. Authorities subsequently bulldozed the tombstones, chapels, and monuments, relocating select remains to other cemeteries and leveling the area into an open city park.
