Sobre el lugar

An open-air sculpture gallery stands directly beside the seat of historic municipal power.

The structure stands on the southern flank of Piazza della Signoria, adjoining the Uffizi Gallery and facing the municipal palace. Broad arches rest on clustered columns with Corinthian capitals, opening the covered hall directly to public view. The sweeping masonry design pleased Florentine citizens so thoroughly that Michelangelo suggested extending identical arched arcades across the entire perimeter of the main civic square.

Benci di Cione and Simone di Francesco Talenti erected the hall for public assemblies and ceremonial inaugurations of civic magistrates. German mercenary pikemen under Grand Duke Cosimo de' Medici later garrisoned inside the loggia, giving the site its common name. Architect Bernardo Buontalenti converted the flat rooftop into a viewing terrace, allowing Medici rulers private oversight of civic events in the square below.
