Sobre el lugar

Europe's largest university hospital functions as a joint medical faculty for Humboldt University and Free University.

Prussian royal orders established the complex outside city fortifications during plague threats, though it soon transitioned into a charity infirmary for impoverished patients. An early anatomical theatre under the Prussian Academy of Sciences laid the groundwork for formal training. Dean Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland later integrated these clinics into the university system to instruct physicians directly at hospital bedsides.

Pathologist Rudolf Virchow created modern cellular pathology and standardized postmortem examination techniques within these wards. Laboratory investigations by Robert Koch isolated the pathogens responsible for tuberculosis, cholera, and anthrax, while Emil von Behring developed the antitoxin for diphtheria. Neurological research by Otto Binswanger on vascular dementia formed the diagnostic foundation that Alois Alzheimer later named.

Heavy bombardment damaged wards during wartime fighting before Soviet forces treated Red Army casualties on site. The hospital operated within East Berlin throughout partition, functioning as an Eastern Bloc medical showcase while pathologists examined deceased escapees from the border wall. German reunification reconnected the medical faculty across major universities into Europe largest research hospital.
