Tahiti International Airport operates as the primary aviation hub for the overseas territory, handling all long-haul international arrivals and inter-island flights.

The airfield occupies land southwest of Papeete in the commune of Fa'a'ā, anchoring operations for domestic carrier Air Tahiti and international carrier Air Tahiti Nui. Before construction, maritime flying boats handled commercial passenger traffic into the capital. The land runway established direct links across the ocean, connecting Tahiti to North America, South America, and neighboring islands without water landings.

Surface transit relies on the west coast freeway, where public buses and airport shuttles stop directly outside the main terminal building to move travelers toward downtown Papeete. For residents staying several months, the hub provides the only domestic interchange for reaching distant archipelagos, alongside scheduled long-haul services to international destinations such as Easter Island, Santiago, and continental hubs.
