Residents in Malá Strana share their morning tram stops and quiet courtyards with a relentless flow of international pilgrims heading to the shrine.
The site originated as a Holy Trinity chapel before German Lutherans erected a larger Roman basilica under an imperial Letter of Majesty. Following the Battle of White Mountain, imperial authorities transferred the property to the Discalced Carmelites, rededicating the complex to Our Lady of Victories and Saint Anthony of Padua. A venerated Marian altarpiece arrived directly from Rome as a gift from the papacy.
Carmelite friars developed an adjacent seminary garden with artificial ponds for raising fish, reshaping the hillside landscape of Malá Strana. Imperial reforms later abolished the monastery and reassigned oversight to the Knights of Malta, though the sanctuary retains its identity as the Shrine of the Infant Jesus. For residents, this history means living beside an active place of veneration rather than a static museum.
