Aeropuerto Internacional de Pago Pago: qué hay cerca, cómo llegar y cuándo ir · 2026

Long-term arrivals base their travel around the Tafuna plain, where the solitary overseas runway handles every transpacific flight entering the island.

Sobre el lugar

Built on the coastal plain of Tutuila, this airfield functions as the sole commercial gateway connecting the territory to the wider Pacific.

The installation began as Tafuna Airfield, constructed from compacted coral for naval defense during the Pacific War. Marine squadrons arrived through the main harbor and hauled aircraft overland across the island to reach these flat grounds. Today the site operates as a civilian airfield southwest of the central harbor district, sharing the broad Tafuna basin with warehouses and light industrial workshops.

Before scheduled commercial aviation arrived, reaching the territory required sea voyages from Western Samoa. The introduction of transpacific flights replaced ocean crossings and prompted a major jet-age expansion, replacing wartime strips with a paved runway and modern passenger facilities. An auxiliary wartime airstrip at Leone was abandoned because of severe mountain air currents, leaving Tafuna as the sole air corridor.
