The primary railway corridor connects Japan's main economic centres.

The railway corridor links Tokyo and Kobe through major urban centres including Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka. Terminus stations anchor both ends, supported by multiple industrial freight branches. High-speed bullet trains run alongside the route on separate tracks, leaving local and rapid services on the original line to manage regional passenger traffic between neighbouring prefectures.

The route draws its name from the historic coastal highway connecting the Kansai and Kanto regions through Tokai. Early planners initially pursued an inland mountain path before selecting this coastal alignment. Later realignments bypassed steep terrain near Kyoto and bored through mountains to avoid detour tracks, while long tunnels forced early electrification because steam engines could not safely clear the enclosed spaces.
