Residents settling in Stellingen trade inner-city commotion for morning sounds drifting from open-air animal enclosures.
Carl Hagenbeck Jr. developed the grounds in Stellingen after expanding the trade started by his fishmonger father. The facility abandoned standard iron cages in favor of hidden moats and sunken trenches. Hagenbeck calculated ditch widths from animal jumping distances recorded in his travelling circus. This panorama technique grouped different species across single sightlines to simulate wildlife living without physical confinement.
Commercial operations initially included human exhibitions alongside exotic wildlife displays. The management presented Sámi, Samoan, Nubian, and Inuit groups in staged outdoor settlements across European tours. Rising public access to photography reduced attendance at these ethnographic shows. The founder redirected surplus elephants into a touring circus before applying open-air presentation methods to animal paddocks.
Sculptor Josef Pallenberg cast life-sized dinosaur figures and ornamental entrance gates that remain prominent park landmarks. Military mobilization during wartime altered daily operations when authorities conscripted animal keepers. Because the army requisitioned private transport horses, park elephants and trained bears hauled urban supply wagons carrying firewood and coal through residential streets to sustain local deliveries.
