Istana Nurul Iman combines the official residence of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah with the active seat of government.

The complex accommodates the official residence of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah alongside the working seat of the national government. State ceremonies and royal hospitality take place within the compound, making the site an active administrative hub rather than an uninhabited historic monument. Long-term arrivals encounter a secure sovereign center where national protocol dictates everyday movement and access across the perimeter.

The grounds occupy an extensive riverside sprawl of leafy hills along the banks of the Brunei River, positioned southwest of Bandar Seri Begawan. Green elevations buffer the palace grounds from neighboring urban districts. Newcomers finding housing in the capital discover that the sprawling sovereign estate preserves dense surrounding forest cover, which permanently limits cross-district transit routes along the riverbank.
