About the place

Fortaleza San Felipe stands as the sole surviving early colonial military fortification in Puerto Plata, guarding the harbor entrance from the headland of Puntilla del Malecón.

Spanish authorities built the fort on the headland of Puntilla del Malecón to defend the seaport of Puerto Plata against European rivals and buccaneers. Francisco Ceballos began the works, Don Rengifo de Angulo finished the walls, and the crown dedicated the site to King Felipe. The stronghold later fell to invading privateers, saw American action during the Quasi War, and served as an imperial refuge during the War of Restoration.

Beyond maritime defense, the fortress functioned as a state prison. President Pedro Santana detained founding father Juan Pablo Duarte here, and the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo later locked away the husbands of the Mirabal sisters. After foreign naval occupation, preservation teams converted the citadel into a public museum. It remains the lone early colonial survivor in Puerto Plata after fires consumed the rest of the historic core.
