About the place

Fortaleza Ozama is the oldest surviving European military construction in the Americas.

Gómez García de Varela designed the stone complex in a medieval military style, placing the Torre del Homenaje at the center of the compound. Enslaved Taíno and African laborers hauled coral stone quarried directly from the sea to raise the main tower and artillery platforms. The compound defended the port against English, French, and Dutch privateers, serving Spanish forces as the primary axis for island operations.

Sir Francis Drake captured the citadel during an overseas raid, breaching defenses that later held privateers and political detainees behind the fortified Calle Damas gate. Former national presidents served sentences inside the stone cells before the complex ended its penal role. Civil war fighting left bullet damage on the entrance doors, prompting the constitutional administration to convert the military compound into a public plaza.
