Residents near Christopher Street trade quiet evenings for regular crowds and active nightlife outside their windows.
The structures on Christopher Street originated as double-height commercial horse stables before undergoing redesign into the Arts and Crafts style under architect William Bayard. Workers reclad the exterior walls in stucco and removed the upper level, while a bakery operated on the street level beneath residential quarters. Architect Harry Yarish later installed a vertical exterior sign and an entrance framed by decorative columns.
Founder Vincent Bonavia initially ran a speakeasy near Seventh Avenue South during Prohibition before relocating the enterprise to Christopher Street once federal alcohol bans ended. The interior adopted the rustic decor of a hunting lodge, and municipal preservation records describe the location as an infamous village tearoom. It hosted local civic banquets and theatre reunions before a fire gutted the dining space.
When civil unrest erupted at the tavern, the establishment was one of the few dedicated gay bars in the city. The ensuing Stonewall riots catalyzed the gay liberation movement and reshaped national LGBTQ advocacy. For long-term neighborhood residents, the site functions not merely as a historic monument but as an active gathering space where political vigils, street commemorations, and regular patrons routinely overlap.
