Residents around Vuhilna Street trade reliable street repairs for direct contact with the surviving Hasidic quarter, where community volunteers steadily uncover concealed synagogue murals.
Merchant Jacob Glanzer funded this Baroque Revival complex for Hasidic worshippers while also donating to the Progressive Tempel Synagogue to prevent sectarian conflict within the wider community. Communal disputes delayed the formal opening of the prayer hall even after workers completed the masonry. Tall semicircular windows illuminate the main prayer space, where original tiers of the southern women's galleries remain intact.
The hall survived wartime occupation as a storehouse while other major Jewish landmarks perished. Soviet authorities later permitted a ritual mikvah bath before staging show trials against worshippers, seizing Torah scrolls, and turning the sanctuary into a printing institute gymnasium. Workers whitewashed ceremonial murals, dismantled the holy ark, and bricked up the eastern Torah niche to erase its sacred character.
The Sholom Aleichem Jewish Culture Society took over the address to establish a museum and communal research hub, beginning extensive masonry repairs on the exterior walls. Restoration teams later revealed previously concealed wall paintings beneath coats of gymnasium paint. Visitors today find a fragile heritage site whose cavernous sanctuary faces ongoing maintenance challenges and prolonged periods of standing empty.
