Living beside the channel means timing your commute around opened river bridges during the navigation season.

Über den Ort

Granite embankments border a short waterway that discharges enormous volumes of fresh water directly into the gulf.

The channel drains Lake Ladoga directly toward the Baltic Sea across northwestern lowlands. Despite running a relatively short distance from source to mouth, the river carries heavy discharge that ranks among the largest on the continent. Historic urban expansion lined the central channels with stone quays to stabilise the marshy soil.

Bridges spanning the main flow define everyday transit between opposing islands and the mainland. Before engineers raised permanent metal spans, temporary pontoons accommodated cross-river traffic whenever weather allowed. Maritime shipping routes still rely on regular night-time openings, halting road transit across key crossings.

DAY 8 - TRAVELING AROUND THE USA

Las Vegas! The city of casinos, the brightest nights, unforgettable experiences, and a place where everything is permitted🔥 There are no historical landmarks, ancient history, or anything of the sort here. Instead, you'll find the most luxurious, expensive, and interesting hotels in the world🔥 And entertainment for every taste, from amusement parks to ordering services directly to your room. After spending two days here, I want to note that for me, Las Vegas has become the most memorable city😍 Maybe it's because we got lost in our own hotel, which was the size of two shopping malls, or because the police were called on us at the casino, or perhaps because in Las Vegas I was able to visit several cities at once... I don't know, I can't single out one thing, but I want to recommend it to ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE (just make sure you are over 21, otherwise you'll only be able to look at the slot machines or break US laws)) And in Las Vegas specifically, I don't recommend skimping on accommodation - it plays an important role here, as all the fun starts in the evening, and you can't just hang out in a terrible hotel during the day. For example, we spent the whole day at the water park 😄 INTERESTING FACTS AND OBSERVATIONS about Las Vegas: 🌿hotel windows don't open so people don't jump after losing in the casino 🌿you can get married in 20 minutes; all you need is a passport and $65 (a divorce costs $450) 🌿Las Vegas is surrounded by nothing but desert 🌿from space, the city looks like the brightest spot on Earth 🌿in casinos, 90% of players are over 30 and 70% are women! 🌿by law, prostitution is illegal in the city itself, but in the state of Nevada... 🌿90% of the city's profit comes from the hotel business and casinos. And, by the way, Las Vegas is considered one of the most expensive cities in the USA 😉

Vegas

The hot Nevada wind pleasantly tousles my damp hair. The Super 6 motel room didn't have a hairdryer, nor did it have: shampoo bath towels a fridge cold water in the tap a conscience on the part of the owners. Furthermore, with a trained housekeeper's eye, I found a hair on the bathroom floor (8 out of 10 on the tragedy scale), and with the naked eye - a plump, charming mouse (just hilarious:). While we wait at the stop for the BHX-Boulder Highway Express bus, which runs straight to downtown Las Vegas, and feel like seasoned travelers - there's time to jot down some background. Bro and I decided to treat ourselves to a vacation. Our rocker souls craved romance, and a month ago, almost all our summer savings were spent on booking plane tickets to Las Vegas, and the month itself - on meditating over a map of the Grand Canyon National Park. *

Long Slow Goodbye

And so the fateful day arrived. September 10th. The first thought upon waking: my last day in the States. I had an even longer journey ahead than usual to Manhattan. I was heading to Brooklyn to see Lena, who had my suitcases. I remember her explaining to me: "Always take the trains heading Downtown, you don't want to go to the Bronx, man, you don't want to!" A long, long way to Lena's, and then waiting until I could get her attention. The thing is, I didn't have an American phone back then, and the intercom in her building didn't really work. In the end, I arrived, shouted for her, threw pebbles at her window, and luckily, after half an hour, she finally opened the door. "-Did you forget anything? -Doesn't look like it!" In the end, I still left behind an iPod box with an old player and a camera. Small things, Lena brought them all to me later. The bus to Newark. Strange, but that's where I was flying out of. I took one last look at the Manhattan skyline. Mixed feelings, though. When we entered Jersey, I immediately remembered the words from How I Met Your Mother: "Ted, you can't move to New Jersey! Teeed! It's New Jersey!" Check-in, luggage. That was it. Time to say goodbye to Lena. Ha, we said goodbye as if we wouldn't see each other again, even though a week later we were already sitting together at university, whining to each other about how we wanted to go back. I put her on the bus back to New York; she was flying out just a day later. I remember wandering around the airport, eating at McDonald's, going into Duty Free to buy my dad a carton of American Marlboro. Well, that's about it. Everything is a bit blurry; my head was overflowing with two diametrically opposed desires at the same time: to return home and to stay here. Well, I decided to be good and not do anything stupid, so I got on the plane. There's no point in telling what happened next, I think. That's how my best summer ended, the most memorable one, full of ridiculously funny stories, new friends, and unforgettable impressions. It's a huge experience, not just of the language. It's an experience of survival, real survival; you have to think with your head, hustle, and do everything to make your life easier. Without that, unfortunately, it's very easy to ruin your summer. Despite all the problems and difficulties before the trip and during the trip—and there were plenty, as usual—I am wildly glad that I went through the 7 circles of hell and made it to the States. Thanks to all my relatives, friends, teachers who gave me easy exams, thanks to the guys I happened to meet in the USA, thanks to Janus Inc. for such a wonderful workplace and Pontiac, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Vegas is a free city

My boyfriend and I took a bus, and we ended up with some very entertaining neighbors... in front of us was a nervous pregnant wife with a husband who indulged her every whim, and a man who visits Vegas often and told us where to go and how best to spend our extra dollars))). Ah, Las Vegas, a city of freedom and big opportunities... After changing clothes at the bus station, we went looking for adventure and to spend some money. We grabbed a guidebook at the very first hotel and headed to the main square. Underneath a long TV-dome canopy that stretched for several blocks, we enjoyed a concert by some band, and afterwards, we witnessed an incredible, magical spectacle—fireworks that felt so close, like 4-5 stories high, but so large-scale, spanning 5-6 blocks (by blocks, I mean like from one avenue to another, I hope you understand what impressed us so much). Then we played in the casino... Well, um... We did great, we actually won $10. Later, while strolling through the streets of Vegas, we wanted to see the city from above, but we arrived a bit too late, so we just looked at it from a window on the top floor of the Stratosphere... A beautiful city, free, unlike any other ;). Then, grabbing our suitcases and taking a taxi, we asked to stop near the crookedest building in Nevada. It turned out to be a hospital—someone has quite an imagination—to be able to turn everything upside down in our minds and bring it to life :). Our plane flew through Cleveland, Ohio... We transferred to a 40-person plane))) it was such a cutie :) and ended up in Washington...

Las Vegas - a dream I never even dreamed of!!

Las Vegas, our first stop and the longest one!! Honestly, Las Vegas is a dream I never even dreamed of!! I never thought I'd end up there!! It's located in the desert in the state of Nevada. We arrived at night, and while approaching, even 50 km away, there was already a glow!! On one side of the desert, it was pitch black, nothing to see, but from the Vegas side, it was so bright in the distance! Anyway, we arrived, found a quiet spot, and went to sleep right in the car ))) In the morning, we went to, so to speak, explore this museum the size of a city!!! While walking, we saw fighter jets taking off from a military base in the distance! It was so hot there, well, it is a desert after all!! Actually, the main part of the casinos and hotels is located along one central street - the Las Vegas Strip! Our first stop was the Caesar Palace hotel, a large casino-hotel complex in the style of Ancient Rome with many statues from that period and Caesar sitting on a horse! Further on, you can see the Paris area with its Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe!! Then the Bellagio hotel-casino with its famous dancing fountains!! A stunning sight!! Then various shops and boutiques follow! The New York-New York area with its mini Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, and other Manhattan buildings. Harley Davidson Cafe! Coca-Cola and M&M’s flagship stores. Next is the Excalibur hotel built like a fairy-tale castle. Also, the Luxor hotel-casino in the shape of a pyramid! Las Vegas even has its own Venice! And another hotel, I don't know the name, has cliffs with waterfalls in its courtyard!! In short, the city never sleeps, crowds of tourists at night, everything sparkling everywhere!! All doors are open 24/7! After spending another night, in the evening we headed towards...

New York, New York

Damn, I really wanted to start describing my trip from day one, but as usual for me, everything is left until the last moment. But apparently, the raccoon living near our house provoked me to fill out this blog after 5 days have passed. So, the flight was great, I didn't sleep, chatted with the guys, took photos of the clouds, and listened to the radio at an altitude of several thousand meters. In Washington, we were exhausted; I hadn't slept for 24 hours in Russia before that, and then the jet lag sent my body into SHOCK. So, after R. and I finally made it to Newark, I discovered my mobile phone was missing—the one I took for God knows why. But the thing is, it was even working in Washington!!! That's it, the phone is gone. They also broke into my suitcase and tossed everything around... Just magical. Searching for housing was pretty exhausting. 3 AM in Brooklyn with a broken suitcase will stay in my memory forever. After that, there was Manhattan and a jazz shelter for students. The first attempt to get in touch with relatives via Skype was unsuccessful. Talking to a Black guy shocked me regarding my English skills, motherf*er!!!!! Day 1. Feeling fresh in the morning, we went looking for a phone for me... I'm too lazy to write, see you...
