Über den Ort

Built as an austere auditorium for Jesuit preaching, Igreja de São Roque hides an opulent Baroque interior behind its plain Renaissance façade.

The site originated as a plague cemetery and shrine dedicated to Saint Roch after relics arrived from Venice during an epidemic. Jesuit authorities subsequently acquired the grounds, commissioning architects Afonso Álvares and Filippo Terzi to build a dedicated preaching venue. The wide single nave with recessed side chapels established an auditorium prototype copied across Portuguese territories.

A sober exterior built in the Portuguese plain style conceals an interior dense with gilt woodwork, painted ceilings, and polychrome glazed tiles. Having survived the great earthquake intact, the complex was assigned to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia following the expulsion of the Jesuit order. The charity continues to maintain the property alongside the ancient Brotherhood of Saint Roch.
