The stone frontispiece stands over Santo António as the sole surviving elevation of Mater Dei church.

The site preserves the granite frontispiece of Mater Dei church, once attached to an early Jesuit college before a typhoon fire burned the wooden compound. The surviving façade rises above a wide flight of stone steps on a small hill beneath Fortaleza do Monte. Carved in the shape of a retable, the frontispiece centres on the Assumption of Mary while incorporating Chinese guardian lions along its lower tiers.

Exiled Japanese artisans who fled anti-Christian bans in their homeland carved the intricate reliefs, blending Catholic doctrine with Asian iconography. Their work displays the Virgin Mary trampling a multi-headed dragon accompanied by Chinese inscriptions. Behind the standing wall, an underground crypt houses the bones of martyred converts, while unmarked ground nearby holds Korean and Japanese victims of the colonial slave trade.
