Über den Ort

Akasaka Palace functions as the official state guesthouse of Japan, featuring French Neo-Baroque architecture originally constructed for the imperial heir.

The site formed the residential compound of the Kishū branch of the Tokugawa clan before transfer to the Imperial Household after the Meiji Restoration. Architect Katayama Tōkuma designed the French Neo-Baroque palace after studying under Josiah Conder at the Imperial College of Engineering. Originally called Tōgū Palace, the complex served as an imperial residence before receiving its modern name.

Regent Crown Prince Hirohito stayed on the estate following the Great Kantō earthquake during prolonged renovations. After wartime changes, the national government transferred the property away from imperial management to house public agencies. The halls hosted the National Diet Library, the Cabinet Legislation Bureau, and the Organizing Committee of Tokyo Olympics before entering diplomatic service.

Architect Togo Murano directed extensive modernization to prepare the estate as the premier official state guest house. Gerald Ford stayed here during an official presidential visit, initiating an ongoing series of multilateral summits and diplomatic conferences. National authorities subsequently declared the main palace structure, the main entry gate, and the fountain garden as an official National Treasure of Japan.
