Burg Fushimi: was in der Nähe ist, wie man hinkommt und wann man fährt · 2026

Residents in Fushimi trade the flat convenience of downtown Kyoto for steep uphill walks past quiet parkland, spending their mornings among reconstructed battlements where tour buses rarely stop.

Concrete battlements replace the lost palace above Kyoto.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi conceived the original fortress as a retirement palace rather than a military bastion, outfitting it with a tea room covered in gold leaf. An earthquake destroyed the initial complex shortly after completion, forcing a swift rebuild. Torii Mototada later defended the rebuilt stronghold against siege, stalling hostile armies long enough for Tokugawa Ieyasu to assemble forces for the Battle of Sekigahara.

Following the siege, authorities dismantled the fortress and repurposed its timbers across Japanese temples and fortifications. Floorboards soaked with the blood of defenders who chose seppuku were incorporated into the ceilings of Kyoto temples, including Yōgen-in, Genkō-an, and Hōsen-in. The original fortress footprint eventually became the permanent resting place for Emperor Meiji.

A concrete replica rose on adjacent ground to anchor an amusement park called Castle Land and house exhibits honoring Hideyoshi. The commercial park shut down, leaving the interior of the concrete tower inaccessible to visitors. Today, the surrounding castle grounds operate as a municipal public space where residents walk paths beneath walls that simulate feudal architecture.
