Über den Ort

Castellani House holds the national art collection inside a historic timber residence in Georgetown.

Maltese architect Cesar Castellani designed the structure on the corner of Vlissengen Road and Homestretch Avenue as a home for government botanist George Samuel Jenman. Jenman initially refused to move inside until builders completed extensive structural alterations to suit his requirements. The wooden building later gained an additional upper storey and underwent further structural remodelling by architect Hugh McGregor Reid.

The property served as housing for colonial agricultural directors before becoming the official residence for Prime Minister Forbes Burnham and First Lady Viola Burnham, when locals referred to the site simply as the Residence. Following the transfer of executive housing to State House, the refurbished complex opened as the National Art Gallery, curated initially by Everley Austin and subsequently by Elfrieda Bissember.
