The shallow basin of Lake Ntomba forms a critical wetland environment in northwestern Equateur Province.

This shallow freshwater body stretches across Bikoro Territory within Equateur Province in the northwestern territory of the country. Historical cartography recorded the body under a distorted non-native pronunciation, while local communities maintain its original name of Lake Ntomba. Water transport remains the primary means of transit between isolated fishing villages along the shoreline and the main administrative posts.

Field workers and visiting specialists adapt to an environment without municipal electric grids or paved road networks. Daily logistics rely on pirogues and chartered motorboats for moving equipment across the shallow water basin. Long-term field teams run independent solar setups and water purifiers while coordinating daily movements with village authorities throughout Bikoro Territory.
