About the place

The Venetian walls encircle Old Nicosia as an intact Renaissance defense system.

The Republic of Venice replaced the medieval Lusignan fortifications with a unified defensive ring to withstand Ottoman expansion. Military engineers Giulio Savorgnan and Francesco Barbaro designed the stone perimeter. Workers demolished existing palaces, churches, and homes to harvest masonry and clear sightlines. Builders diverted the Pedieos outside the center to prevent flooding and supply the perimeter moat.

Ottoman forces breached the incomplete earthworks at Podocattaro Bastion and stationed a military garrison inside the captured capital. The defensive circuit fell into decay over subsequent generations. British administrators later pierced the curtain wall near Paphos Gate to connect the confined interior with expanding suburbs. These historical breaches and the surviving bastions still shape daily foot transit around the Old City.
