Residents in Bronzeville share their blocks with historic landmarks of modern gospel, trading downtown retail density for community-led preservation and neighborhood legacy.
Designed by architects Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, the structure originally housed the synagogue congregation Kehilath Anshe Ma'arav before becoming home to a Baptist congregation. The building achieved designation as a Chicago Landmark and joined the National Register of Historic Places, celebrated for both its architectural pedigree and its cultural contributions to the South Side.
Under pastor Junius C. Austin, the congregation hired music director Thomas A. Dorsey and mural painter William E. Scott. Dorsey established modern gospel traditions within these walls, nurturing performances by Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Sallie Martin, and the Staples Singers. The church also engaged directly with the Civil Rights Movement, hosting sermons delivered by Martin Luther King Jr.
Long-term residents exploring Bronzeville encounter the site along South Indiana Avenue, where ownership transferred toward establishing the National Museum of Gospel Music. Visitors often confuse the landmark with a different south-side church featured in film productions. The property remains an essential stop for understanding how South Side community institutions shaped global Black musical culture.
