Residents living in Fana wake up next to a reconstructed medieval landmark protected by security fences rather than an ordinary neighbourhood parish.
The building originated at Fortun in Sogn near the Sognefjord before a modern parish church replaced it. Facing demolition alongside many traditional wooden churches across Norway, the structure survived because consul Fredrik Georg Gade purchased the timber frame and transported it in pieces to Fana. Outside the reconstructed sanctuary stands an ancient stone cross brought over from Tjora in Sola Municipality.
Arson completely destroyed the transplanted church during a wave of attacks linked to the early Norwegian black metal scene. Investigators initially blamed lightning or electrical failure, and a photograph of the smouldering ruins subsequently appeared on the cover of the Burzum record Aske. A protracted rebuilding project recreated the wooden edifice, which now stands behind an enclosure fence to guard against further sabotage.
