Clinical fellows at Tel HaShomer trade normal city life for a sprawling hospital campus where daily routines revolve entirely around wards, simulation labs, and on-site recovery wings.
The complex began in abandoned military barracks to care for wartime casualties before prime minister David Ben-Gurion renamed the facility. After transitioning to civilian administration under Chaim Sheba, the site expanded into a regional medical headquarters. Today the grounds contain specialized acute care wards, an expansive rehabilitation hospital, dedicated pediatric facilities, maternity wings, and clinics for combat trauma.
Beyond standard inpatient treatment, the grounds host national epidemiology research facilities, the central blood bank, and advanced oncology and cardiac institutes. Medical teams train at the on-site simulation center, while international researchers collaborate across academic departments. Patients recovering from complex surgeries can stay beside clinical supervision inside the dedicated on-campus rehabilitation hotel.
Clinical operations extend past municipal borders through humanitarian programs for regional patients, including children from the Palestinian Authority. The institution dispatches disaster response teams to overseas emergencies, assists foreign partners with hospital construction, and performs specialized pediatric cardiac procedures. Bilateral agreements also connect campus physicians with healthcare institutions in the United Arab Emirates.
