National history museums construct civic self-portraits through preserved material culture.

Institutions of this category focus their collections on artifacts that narrate the trajectory of their home state. Early public repositories like the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Louvre in Paris prioritized natural history and fine art rather than national identity. The National Historical Museum follows the later tradition of using dedicated material exhibits to present a coherent narrative of the country.
